  • Should I de-friend this guy on Facebook

Yesterday I was contacted by an old friend via Facebook. I’d gone to school with her in 9th grade, and we’d known each other after that time too.

While looking through her friends and her friends’ friends looking for people I know, I found the name of another guy I’d gone to school with. He didn’t have a profile picture, so he must have just recently set up his site, because he has one there now. So I sent him a friend invitation which he accepted today.

So now that I see his picture, he looks a lot older than I. Well, maybe I look older than I think I do, right? I looked at his info page and he is thirty years older than me, which means there’s at least a pretty good chance that he’s not the same guy with whom I went to school!

So now what do I do? I invited him, so do I send him a note and say, “Whoops! Sorry, wrong guy.” and send him on his virtual way? Do I just keep him as a friend (can’t have too many, right?).

I’m friends with gobs of people on Xanga that I’ve never met in real life. Most people reading this are like that. But Facebook seems more like a place to keep in touch with people you know, not people that you’ve come to know online.

So what’s the proper etiquette in this situation?

Just to be clear, I’m not stressing about this thing, but I do wonder if there’s some sort of proper way to handle this.

  • Hmmmm… well I guess it’s safe to just de-friend and he may not ever know the difference.

  • FB has a lot more personal, contact info – politely defriend is my vote. I would!

  • I’d say you have three options:

    1. Keep him on your friends list and don’t talk to him.

    2. Tell him you made a mistake and were looking for someone with the same name.

    3. Delete him without saying anything,  he likely won’t notice.

And Facebook is how you said,  it’s good for keeping in touch. I have 98 friends on Facebook and know almost all of them. I have 941 friends on Xanga and know about 20-30 of them.

  • actually got that one @ 7:46 Monday morning with a rifle.  The biggest so far for me:).

  • @wilpete7 -

Are you in PA? Not a bad way to start the season!

  • @SpiderDad - yes, Potter County, Pa

  • @wilpete7 -

Ah yes, where the deer are. I’m in Lancaster county, where the deer usually aren’t (or at least there’s not a lot of them any more). Are you going to have it mounted? What’s the weight on him?

  • I did a similar thing.

I just deleted the person without saying anything.

  • I would just say “I thought you were an old aquaintence of mine sorry for the mistake!”   I personally would feel bad if somebody automatically deleted me without a note to explain their mistake.  I think most people would.

  • Just send him a note saying, “Sorry, I thought you were somene else” and delete him.

  • Hon, dementia does eat up the years you know … when was the last time you looked in a mirror?

Grins .. its ok grandad … tell grandma and ma hi for me!

  • oh and btw … an explanation in a sweet way would be a better way to back out of the situation.

  • Actually the deer here in Lancaster County are still bigger, being corn-fed and all… I didn’t think he had a huge body, just pretty much normal . He might be a 3.5 year old. Am getting a shoulder mount.
