  • Phillies

The Phillies are playing unbelievably lately. Their offense is amazingly potent. Tonight, their starting pitcher gave up three runs in the top of the first. So before they came to bat they were down three. The response? Score SEVEN in the bottom of the second. Ridiculous.

I’ve been a Philadelphia sports fan, specifically the Phillies and the Eagles, all my life. We’ve now officially gone 25 years(!) without a championship parade. Part of the legacy passed on to me from my father – and that I’ve passed on to my children – is disappointment at the end of every sports season. We’re cynical by now, but we still have to continue to cheer for them. It’s in our blood.

Btw, as I’m typing this, they just scored another run making it 8-3. Go Phils!

  • I grew up a (baseball) Cardinals fan – great team, great history – but lost interest in baseball after a couple of strikes, the realignment of the divisions, and living far away from St. Louis for a long time. I may have to cultivate an interest in baseball again when we move back.

I was in college there in the 80s during the Whitey Herzog days and several division, league, and/or “world” championships… Those were some great teams!

Oh yeah, the Cardinals in the ’80s were quite the team. What did they win – like three World Championships? The Phils and the Cards had some good battles at times back then. Baseball in the ’80s was fun.

  • @SpiderDad - I remember Mike Schmidt at 3rd… not to many other Phillies names though.

IIRC: Cards won World Series in ’82, NLCS in ’85 but lost World Series to Kansas City (bad call in Game 5… not that I’m still bitter or anything… Cards had been up what, 3 games to zip?) and then in ’87 – can’t remember if that was World Series or not quite… we had moved to Phoenix early in ’87.

A mouse just ran across the floor six feet from me. I guess I should be in bed so I could more easily pretend they don’t exist here…

Steve Carlton, Pete Rose, Larry Bowa

One of us should look it up, but I’m pretty sure the Cards won 3 in the 80s.

    Maybe that’s Mighty Mouse! :)

  • I don’t follow baseball.

Nope, just ’82. They were IN it three times but lost in ’85 and ’87.

You are, of course, absokutely correct! I looked it up on Wikipedia last night. I did see that they’ve won 10 titles, more than any other NL team. I guess my memory is starting to fail me in my old age. =-0

  • Phillies? As in the cheese spread? WHAT!?!?!

You Americans just DONT speak the same english as we the Australians of the world do .. sigh!
